A very romantic UK retreat: Cowley Manor, Gloucestershire

Cowley Manor is not your average wedding destination.

The Brideshead-evoking, Italianate façade and vast 55-acres of neatly tended gardens hide a funky, modern interior which you just don't expect when driving up the snaking gravel path. Saying that, the colourful, contemporary design really works. The rooms may have high ceilings and impressive vistas but the comfy furniture and "no-ego" attitude of the staff makes Cowley feel extremely intimate, and more like a family home than a 30-bedroom hotel. Its relatively small size and rural setting make Cowley an excellent venue for small, exclusive weddings and ceremonies can be held in the picturesque Norman church next door which, even if you aren’t getting married there, is fun to explore.

The converted stable block, which had its own al fresco terrace, and an enormous roll-top bath that you could almost fall asleep in. The light and airy C-Spa, set in the estate's Grade II* private gardens, this award-winning complex boasts an indoor and outdoor pool (take your pick depending on the weather), a steam room and a sauna. There's also a number of enticing treatments on offer including the wonderfully named Calmia. Coming out of treatment room try to find time to have a lazy wander around the lake and the awe-inspiring Victorian cascading waterfall.
